Part 0: The professionals who use phones to create music. (10m)

Watch the below video and discuss the following questions with your group/class.

  1. What app does Steve Lacy use and are there other apps like it?

  2. What device is used to connect instruments to the phone?

  3. What style/ genre did they create?

  4. Identify the two instruments used in the interview

  5. Who are some artists Steve Lacy writes music with?


Part 1: Becoming familiar with a digital audio workspace (DAW) (10m)

Making a song with an app - watch and follow along from 2:00

Write down the steps to take to create a 2 section song with your group while following along with your ipad. This should include how to:

  • Create new song and setting a tempo

  • Add looped instruments

  • Add instruments

  • Create a new section

  • Create transitions (‘riser’ in video)

  • Creation of a melody

  • Recording your track

  • Exporting your track

Part 2: Creating your own track (10m)

Create your own song using the method written down. It must have:

  • Have 2 contrasting sections

  • Minimum of 2 loops and 1 instrument

  • A melody

  • A harmony

  • Maximum of 50 seconds - Minimum of 20s

When finished, export the audio and send it to: teacher@nsw.edu.au
